2011 Gentlemen's Ride

Registration for the 2011 Gentlemen's Ride is open and will be done by postcard. The race is set for Saturday, September 24th. Each team of four riders must have in it's ranks at least one rider from the 2011 Almanzo 100. The event will be timed in a fashion that will make each team as fast as it's slowest rider (short story: work together and it'll go pretty smooth).

Postcards will need to be post-marked by the 13th of August.

Gentlemen's Ride teaser

There have been a fair amount of questions coming in regarding the registration process for the Gentlemen's Ride and there will be specific information on that in a few days. Until then it's important to keep a few things in mind.

One, registration will be done by postcard (it's nice getting mail).

Two, each Gentlemen's Ride team must be made up of four people (men or women or both).

Three, at least one team member must have competed in the 2011 Almanzo 100 or Royal 162.

Four, each team is only as fast as their slowest rider (gentlemanly rules apply).

Five, there will be no support for this event. None. Not even a little bit.

Six, there are only two rules: DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE TO ANYONE and DON'T LITTER.

That ought to cover things enough until there is a more formal follow up in a few days. As always, if you've got questions post them up here or send me an electronic mail and I'll do my best to answer.

There are people among us that make the world a better place. Teachers that take the time to work with our kids, doctors that spend extra hours trying to figure out solutions to problems that have yet to be solved and community leaders that step in for the common good. As a cyclist, my world involves bicycles. I suppose that goes without saying, but I mention it because in making my personal world a better place I have to consider the people inside the bicycling industry alongside those that contribute to the general population (i.e. teachers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, etc). So it is, without any obligation, my pleasure to relay to you a short list of the people that I believe are making the immediate cycling world a better place. While I will obviously not hit all of them on the first try (I apologize if I missed somebody), the following persons have immediately affected, for the positive, the growth and success of the Almanzo Project.

2011 Closing Arguments

In 1983 Art Forum published an article in which Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) stated, "People pay to see others believe in themselves." I mention this because it is a phrase I have gone back to time and time again in working toward creating and maintaining the Almanzo 100. It has taken me a little more than a week and well over 1000 solo miles in the car to begin to decompress from the weekend of May 13th, 14th and 15th. As some of you may know, during the race I was participating in my own endurance event in that I had only had a total of ten hours of sleep over a four day period. I have poured every ounce of my life into this event and I have never really been able to comprehend just exactly what the whole thing means. This week I think I may have gotten a little bit closer to understanding.

What is Almanzo? This is a question I get so frequently. So often in fact that I have formulated my very own short answer, to which the questioner leaves with less than they came. The answer I give is this, "It's just a bike race". In thinking about that answer, reading the reports from some of those that rode last weekend and examining the photos from those that captured images during the event, I am afraid I might need to seriously reconsider my approach to the question that is, "What is Almanzo?".

You see, when this whole thing got started in 2007 I really didn't know much about organizing bike races. I had organizing nailed down in that I had spent the better part of my adult life to that point meticulously arranging things and making sure that everything was just so. Organizing was easy. Bike racing, however, was the complicated part. I didn't have a network of cyclists to pull from. I didn't have a giant resumé that would qualify me as the right person for the job. I was a nobody for all intents and purposes. A nobody with an idea that claimed that a race should and could be nothing more than that, just a race. A test of man against himself. A game played on a field where the only benefactors are those that show up to compete. I had no idea at the time what would become of all of this.

I didn't know then that to watch a man complete a task that had previously been insurmountable to him would end up being so gratifying. I have ridden in these events. I have ridden in a lot of events. I have fathered children, remodeled homes and even come close to death. I have lived a hard life and I have enjoyed the liberties of a soft one. I have traveled and I have stayed home. In my short 33 years on this planet I have been a witness to many things, but none so powerful as watching a man believe in himself.

For the sake of this article I will tell you that I have struggled with self-doubt for the better part my entire life and I do not believe I am alone in that. I have spent many sleepless nights asking myself questions like, "Is it all really worth it?" I have come so close, on so many occasions, to pulling the plug on this entire affair. I certainly have my shortcomings.

Fast forward to Saturday the 21st of May. A sleep deprived journey to the Great Northwoods for the Cheq 100 left me fighting to stay awake behind the wheel, making a wrong turn and ultimately showing up late as a DNS for the event. Barely making the start line as a witness for the race's grand departure, I quickly offered my assistance afterward to the event organizers. They politely offered me directions to the Fire Tower climb and said they would meet me there. They left, I left and again I was all alone with nothing but my thoughts.

As I made my way along the rocky, rutted and branch littered fire roads that lead to the highest point in the forest I again thought about the Almanzo and the role it played in the bigger cycling picture. It wasn't until I had been standing in the company of my organizing peers and watching the first riders approach the summit that it occurred to me; The Almanzo, like the Cheq 100, is about people believing in themselves. No more, no less.

Rewind, on May 14th, I stood in the cold rain and wind and watched as more than 300 riders from all different backgrounds take off into what were obviously miserable conditions. On May 14th I watched more than 300 riders believe in themselves. What is happening with grassroots cycling here in Minnesota and throughout the Upper Midwest is incredible. As an event organizer and rider I am a firsthand witness to the power that these events hold. As a human being I am a witness to the enormous potential that comes with believing in oneself. That is what Almanzo is. It is an opportunity for people to see the past, imagine the future, capture the moment and believe in themselves.

I am genuinely humbled by the way the last 5 years have gone. I am forever indebted to the riders that have come to Almanzo and believed in me when I didn't have the capacity to do it myself. I am grateful for the willingness of others to give up their time and contribute their efforts to making sure each event goes without a hitch. I am proud to stand at the finish line and offer my hand to those that complete. I am beholden to all for the opportunity to be a part of, rather than apart from.

Thank you to everyone that has made my Almanzo experience a heartfelt one.

Yesterday morning there was a bike ride that road by our farm that is north of county 4 between Chatfield and Spring Valley. A number of these riders stopped and took a break in my yard. I thought it was a little strange that they felt so comfortable sitting on private property, my front yard. Since they were not doing any harm and my dogs were in the house I let it go, but then some started using my mailbox to rest their bikes up against. Soon more riders would stop and use my yard as a resting stop. One of these riders even urinated directly across from my driveway as my children watched him from my front window. There is a field drive 50 feet from my driveway lined with trees that would have been more appropriate. I do not know if this was the almanzo ride because I haven't seen a map of the ride, but if it is would you please remind your riders to respect private property. I really felt that it was inappropriate behavior I witnessed.

Course Conditions (as of 5/11/11)

Royal 162:

There is a portion of the Royal 162 that will be an out & back. This section (can be viewed here) will include close to two miles of off-road riding with dismounts. The off-road portion is on private property that is being loaned to us for the day. Please treat it with respect or I will personally kick your ass (the landowner has been very generous in allowing us to use their land and this is a relationship I will not disrupt).

Both Events:

I was out on parts of the course yesterday and the roads look pretty good. There are some soft spots and some portions of new rock, but it still looked like there were pretty good lines throughout. Please be careful on some of the bigger descents, as they do have some new rock on them which can make them a bit sketchy.

The course will be marked in places the I think could use a little help. I will be placing a small cedar plank with the Almanzo "A" burned into it and an arrow pointing in the direction of travel. These planks will also be marked with little flags (think utility marking flags). Please note that these markers will not however substitute your cue sheets and that you must follow the cues exactly to navigate the course.

On the water crossing:

You'll be crossing it in both events. This is what it looks like as of May 11th.

Royal Riders:

Your event leaves sharply at 7:00am and will be cutoff at 10:00pm. Ride safe and be smart, polite and courteous. We have an opportunity to make a lasting impact on a region that otherwise might not get to see cycling in this fashion.

Almanzo Riders:

Your event leaves sharply at 9:00am and will be cutoff at 9:00pm. At approximately 8:55am, I am going to ask everyone to sing Happy Birthday to my son(he'll be five; we did it last year and it seems to take the edge off quite a bit). Ride safe and be smart, polite and courteous. We have an opportunity to make a lasting impact on a region that otherwise might not get to see cycling in this fashion.

What to expect on race day:

FROM THE ROUTE: These are challenging courses. 100 miles is no small task (and 162 is certainly nothing to balk at) and when you ride them on gravel and they become something entirely different. It is going to punish you, but it is definitely manageable if you pace yourself and understand the big picture (portions of which are laid out below).

• There is one town near both routes. Preston is located near the 40-mile mark. The city of Preston has everything anyone might need to refuel, call it quits, etc. This is the only community along the Almanzo 100 route (the Royal passes through Harmony near mile 65) with retail outlets that can fill your supply needs. AFTER MILE 40 YOU WILL BE ON YOUR OWN WITH NO PLACE TO REFUEL UNTIL THE FINISH LINE.

• There is cell phone coverage for the better part of the course. The areas that are not covered by cell phone towers are typically the valleys, but if you get to the summit of a climb YOU SHOULD GET CELL PHONE COVERAGE.

• As you re-enter (the finish) the city of Spring Valley, you will be traveling on busy, open access city streets, act accordingly. Mind the cars and be respectful. A free race (or any race) isn’t worth a crash or dare I say something worse.

FROM YOURSELF: It is best to look at riding 100 or 162 miles in one go the same as you would look at running a full marathon. While it is definitely something that the average person could complete without any training, the pain and suffering that would come along with it would not be worth the effort.

• Train.

• Ride a lot. Ride to work. Ride to school. Get out and ride a couple of longer rides during the week. Ride gravel. Ride as much as you can. You will thank yourself when you reach the finish line and can walk and not throw up.

• You will need water…lots of it. We have been a witness to a human being riding this course with only two (2) water bottles (no re-fills). It is possible, but it is definitely not the case with most riders. It is dreadfully important to understand nutrition and hydration before undertaking an event like this. Train to understand. Train to eat on the bike. KNOW YOUR LIMITS and ACT ACCORDINGLY.

• You will need food. The human body is capable of amazing things. However, it is not able to do them without the proper nutrients. Bring food you know you will be able to eat. I have seen everything from pizza to beef jerky to candy bars to mike & ikes. KNOW WHAT WORKS FOR YOU and ACT ACCORDINGLY.

• Know your body. We get cramps when we ride for a long time. Through riding a lot and trying different remedies, we have been able to solve this issue and the cramps no longer occur. Know your body. Five to ten hours on a bike is a long time. Your body will let you know when it has had too much of something and mid-race is not the place to get introduced to each other. The more you ride now, the better off you will be when you are all alone and talking yourself back down from the proverbial ledge (we've been there during a race and it sucks, but KNOWLEDGE IS POWER and we're glad it happened).

• Pace yourself. You have 12 hours to ride 100 miles. Sure it’s gravel. Sure it’s hilly, but it isn’t impossible. Go as hard as you like, but if you do not know your body and your bike, you may end up in the “hurt locker” before you’re ready and that sucks...trust me.

FROM THE VOLUNTEERS: We are your hosts. Imagine this event like a giant group ride, complete with town line sprints and king of the mountain challenges. We have invited you all here, to start from the town that has embraced us and ride a route that we have found to be amazing.

• We will give you directions that we have found to work the best and send you on your way.

• We will not be there at every turn to make sure you are headed in the right direction.

• We will not close roads and arrange for the appropriate law enforcement agencies to police the course and ensure your safety.

• We will not cater to you because “you are the fastest and you are in the lead”. We will take every measure to ensure that the check-in and checkout process at the mid-way point is thorough and efficient, but we are humans.

• There will not be any electric timing devices (other than a stopwatch) used by us throughout the course of this event. Please do not dispute the times given by us. We promise to do the best we can with what we have.

• We will be at the start to ride everyone out of town and we will be at the finish to welcome you back. We are happy that you have decided to come and give the Almanzo 100 and Royal 162 events a try and we promise to make every attempt to make sure that your experience here in Rochester, Spring Valley and the greater Southeastern Minnesota area a pleasant one.

• We will not provide you a water/aid station at any point during the event. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN and should ACT ACCORDINGLY.

• We will not come get you if you become stranded. You must be prepared for the unlikely event that you should have to abandon the race. You must make your own arrangements for leaving the course should you become stranded. NO ONE IS COMING TO GET YOU UNLESS YOU’VE ARRANGED FOR IT.

FROM YOUR FELLOW RIDERS: During the race you will be riding with 700 other people that have the same basic things in common.

• If you see someone stopped on the side of the road, ask if they “HAVE EVERYTHING?” If not, please stop and offer assistance. You may have an extra tube or some water or some food that might make the difference in someone finishing or not. It is common courtesy. If we hear that anyone neglected to help a fellow rider, we will have no problem calling that person out. Don’t be an ass and you’ve got nothing to worry about.

• Ride smart and expect the same from others. Group riding is much different than riding alone. If you find yourself in the peloton, please ride with care and be alert. The easiest place to crash is in the peloton and it is often times the worst place to crash. If you are not comfortable riding elbow to elbow with other racers, either ride off the front or off the back, but don’t risk injury to yourself and others by riding in the group when you are not capable or comfortable.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER: Have fun. These are intended to be fun, but extremely challenging events. We have the perfect opportunity to represent the cycling world at large. We will be traveling through areas that rarely see this kind of bicycle traffic and we may startle some of the inhabitants there.

• PLEASE BE POLITE AND RESPECTFUL.

• DO NOT LITTER.

• OBEY THE TRAFFIC LAWS.

• YIELD TO AUTOMOBILES.

• DON’T BE AN IDIOT AND THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE FOR IT. More people on bikes is a great thing and riding like a douche bag with no consideration for others is the easiest way to keep any non-rider from wanting to get on a bike.

• BE AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE SPORT. We have one chance this May to get it done right here in Southeastern Minnesota and it would be a shame to blow it.

Regarding the start times, event windows and services available for the two events.

The Royal 162:

This event will start promptly at 7:00am. Riders will need to be checked in and making their way to the start line by 6:45am.
Day of check in begins at 6:00am and will run until 6:45am.
The riders of the Royal 162 will have 15 hours to complete the course.
This 162 miles course will pass through the communities of:

Preston(mile 38, full services off the course)
Harmony(mile 65, full services off the course)
Granger (mile 101, no services)
Forestville State Park (mile 125, water off the course)
Cherry Grove (mile 138, no services)
Wykoff (mile 149.5, to access Wykoff riders must ride 1 mile east of course, basic services)

The Almanzo 100:

This event will start promptly at 9:00am.
Day of check in will begin at 7:15am and run until 8:40am
The Almanzo 100 riders will have 12 hours to complete the course.
This 100 mile event will pass through the communities of:

May 14th is fast approaching and we hope that you’ve been able to get out on the bike and put down some miles. For our part, there are a few things we’d like to mention to help you with your race-day/weekend planning.

On the spirit of being self-supported:

First and foremost, we’d like to remind you that this event is entirely self-supported. We will provide no aid stations and no sag for this event. You are very much on your own. Allowing friends, family, coaches, etc to follow you along the course provides an unfair advantage and will not be permitted.

That said, you can meet friends, family, coaches, sponsors or whomever inside the city of Preston (approx. mile 40). Any other non-racer assistance beyond this is outside of the rules and will result in disqualification.

Examples:

a.) If you are inside the city of Preston and your non-racing friend hands you a water bottle full of whiskey, it is okay to take it.

b.) If you are on the course outside of the city of Preston and your non-racing friend hands you a water bottle full of whiskey, it is not okay to take it.

c.) If you are on the course and you are dying of thirst and make your way to a farmhouse or local tavern and ask for a whiskey, it is okay to take it as long as you re-enter the course at the point from which you left.

On navigation:

The courses for the Almanzo 100 and Royal 162 will not be marked and will take place on open rural roads. We will provide each rider with one full set of cue sheets (4.25” x 5.5”). These cue sheets will contain all of the directions needed to get you from start to finish. For those not familiar, there is an excellent article regarding reading cues and tulip notes on the Ragnarök blog.

There will be one checkpoint located in Forestville State Park where each rider will be responsible for having their bib number recorded by our generous volunteers. This is to ensure that no rider has cut the course and that all participants are honest in their efforts. If you should fail to have your number recorded we can only assume that you have skipped the checkpoint and, as such, you will not be recorded as a finisher for your event.

On registration & traveling to the race:

We will be having a pre-race sign-in at Glynner’s Pub (marked on Google map) in Rochester from 3:00pm to 9:00pm Friday evening, May 13th. This is a great place to pick up your packet, sign your mandatory release form (if you haven’t downloaded it here and signed it in advance) get something to eat/drink and meet your competition. Preregistering Friday evening will relieve you from the stress of signing in and racing to get ready for the start on Saturday morning. If you can arrive Friday evening things should go very smoothly for all of us on Saturday.

The map to Glynner’s also marks a couple other points of interest including a bike shop in Rochester where you can pick up any last minute supplies (tubes, levers, nutrition, etc.) and the location of my house for those that are camping in the yard.

On race day parking is going to be an issue. Parking is going to be an issue. Parking is going to be an issue. If and where possible, please carpool, as parking is going to be an issue. We will have volunteers ready to direct you to the correct space; just look for their red shirts. We will be parking cars from the back to the front according to their arrival. Please work with us on this one. I have included a Google map that will mark the space for overflow parking. It will be a short ride from the start if we need to use it, but your legs could use the short spin anyway. Long story short, arrive early so that you have plenty of time to get signed in and make the start line for the 8:45am pre-race remarks.

At the risk of being redundant, you will be traveling on open rural roads. While it should be minimal, there will be traffic on the course. Please ride within your limits, be aware of paved and blind intersections and ride with respect to those around you, racers or otherwise.

We are guests in Fillmore County, and the cities of Spring Valley, Harmony and Preston; we should behave as such to ensure that gravel racing continues. This includes leaving no trace. Please help us keep our home beautiful by not littering. Simply stated; pack it in, pack it out.

Also, there may/will be more specific information as we get closer and as it becomes available. Please check the blog frequently as that will be the forum for updates, course conditions and important notes from here forward. There will also be an announcement regarding the pre-sale of a second round of jersey, bibs and wind jackets.

The bib shorts do have a chamois that has been designed with longer endurance events in mind (think just a tiny bit thicker than your typical summer bib). Yesterday, on my way out of the city, I picked up a pile of handmade hats with the Almanzo 'A' screened on them from Holly at Grovecraft. For those of you that don't know Holly, there is a great write-up about her (and her efforts) over here. These hats are beautiful and they are for sale. Each hat is $30 and payment can be made via the DONATE button to the right.

Make sure you specify which hat (color/size) you'd like when making the payment. If you want it shipped, change the price to $33 to cover the cost of sending it, otherwise if you want to pick it up or have it hand delivered, make a note about that and we'll make sure it happens.

I have been thinking a lot about life and everything there is to do with it lately and how the bicycle plays an integral role for me. To me the bicycle is a tool, not unlike any other I might find in the garage or a cupboard in the kitchen. It is a tool that allows me an opportunity, every time I step over it and pedal away, to get a little bit closer to the world around me.

Being on a bicycle grants me a chance to hear birds sing and children laugh. It allows me the delightful feeling of rain on my skin and the wind in my hair. It offers me a connection to the world that I otherwise might not get if I am bottled up inside of an automobile. As it is, I spend the better part of my time awake indoors working to keep shelves stocked or encouraging others to buy bicycles and experience the same things I do. If I did not take the time to get on my bike and ride to work or just for fun, I am afraid I would miss everything in between.

This world is an incredible space and I am fortunate to be a part of it. I feel lucky to have found the bicycle and all that it allows. I am honored to be a part of a community that continues to grow and blossom and as long as I can, I will continue to try and pay it forward. Spring is upon us and I am excited for the gravel road racing season to begin. Thank you all for everything and hopefully I will see you out on the road.

Hello all. I have just returned from a fantastic visit to the Minneapolis area. The weekend found me eating here and here, getting coffee here, riding with this guy and a host of great bicycle people and hanging out on the dock behind this place. A great weekend and one I hold very high (it's at the top actually) on my annual list of things to do.

As far as race stuff goes, I'm knees deep in getting things organized. As it stands right now, we will be having a pre-race check-in the Friday before the race, much like we did last year. Here's how it will most likely breakdown.

Friday:

1:00pm to 3:00pm - Check-in at Bicycle Sports (the shop I work at) in Rochester
5:00pm to 8:00pm - Check-in at Glynner's Pub (my neighborhood bar) in Rochester
8:00pm to infinity - Hang out at the Pub, go back to my house (just a few blocks away), go to your hotel/tent/rock/bivy/etc...

Saturday:

6:00am - Royal 162 check-in at Kingsland High School (start/finish) in Spring Valley
6:50am - Royal 162 pre-race announcements
7:00am - Royal 162 start
7:05am to 8:45am - Almanzo 100 check-in at Kingsland High School in Spring Valley
8:50am - Almanzo 100 pre-race announcements
9:00am - Almanzo 100 start
4:00pm - Almanzo 100, 62 mile checkpoint closes
6:00pm - Royal 162, 124 mile checkpoint closes

That is the current schedule (which is certainly subject to change). I would like to recommend everyone that can (especially those riding in the Royal 162), to please come Friday and get checked in ahead of time. This will make everything go a lot smoother on Saturday morning.

We will have volunteers helping get cars parked in an orderly fashion so as to use the space available to it maximum capacity, please respect them and do as they suggest as 700+ is a lot of people and cars.

Carpool where possible.

If for some reason you cannot make it, please let us know so that we can make decisions accordingly.

I touched on a few things in the mass email that went out right after registration closed, but I wanted to go over a few things again. I updated the RULES button over there (underneath the DONATE button) in case you want to clarify anything.

First and foremost YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN for this. There will be no drop bag service this year (some things just don't scale to 700+ riders) and there is no aid station. What this means is that no one from the Almanzo team will come to fix your flat or otherwise lend you a hand. That said, you can meet anyone you like within the city of Preston (near the 40 mile mark).

Most importantly, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN and are expected to follow the rules of the road. We have an excellent opportunity to bring cycling to a community that might not otherwise experience it. Please be stewards for the sport and show the people we'll meet that cycling is fun AND productive for the human spirit.

Welcome to the largest Almanzo event ever. From the 13 pioneers, to the 59ers, those who rode “The Hurricane” and the 300 who took the line in Spring Valley just last year, the Almanzo 100 has grown like a thundercloud.

On May 14th, you’ll line up with either 100 or 600 other brave souls to take part in something that we believe has grown to symbolize the current state of free bicycle racing. We didn’t give birth to the idea of racing a bicycle for free, but we have taken the last five years to make the Almanzo project one of the best experiences available.

This year you’ll find yourself on 100 or 162 miles of rolling gravel roads starting and ending in Spring Valley, Minnesota. You’ll ride the entire Almanzo 100 course with an extra, 62 mile loop off the middle if you’re signed up for the Royal. These roads “should” be hard packed and easy to ride, but it will be spring so please keep that in mind.

This year we’ve made a change and abandoned the drop bag system because of some of logistical reasons and a want to return to the pure, simple nature of these incredible self-supported events. The short story is, you are, as always, responsible for you. This means that you’ll need to be responsible for packing enough food and water to travel the entire 100 or 162 mile route and while there is a possibility that some greater good will come along and provide some trail magic, we don’t suggest you plan on it. We will however give you more information about the course so that you can accurately make decisions on what to pack and how to prepare.

On a side note, we’re all really excited for the gravel road racing season this year and we hope you are too. With seven events in the AGRS:Race for the Cup things are looking up for free bicycle racing here in the state of Minnesota. We hope that with your help that we can continue to build on an amazing community of similarly minded individuals. Riding bikes is great, racing them for free is unbelievable!

On another note, we're also in the serious planning stages for the first ever Almanzo Market which is going to take place whilst everyone is out riding their bikes. It's something we figured we'd put together for all the folks that don't ride and still devote their entire day to waiting around for you. We have reserved some space for industry types should you be one and would like to have a space for your bikes/accessories/etc.

Good morning. We hope the new year came in with a bang and that your hangover is mild. As you may know by now, registration is open. By hand, horse or USPS you are all now welcome to submit your entry for the 2011 running of the Almanzo 100 and Royal 162. All we ask is that you follow the directions over here to get your name on the roster over there --> and we'll be all set.

As far as the events go, their descriptions have already been broken down so if you've got questions check them out here (or let us know and we'll be happy to help you out).

For the third year in row we will be selling an Almanzo jersey (and possibly bib shorts) to help raise money to pay for this whole thing. We're currently ironing out some fine details, but the design(s) will be up in the next couple of days and pre-sale will begin there-after. We also have plans to offer up some socks and tees for those not interested in the whole kit thing, but we'll see what happens there (stay tuned).

Here at the Almanzo World Headquarters we've been milling over the future of things for the last six months. So far we've examined plans to walk away from everything and let it all live on as a memory. We've discussed potential plans to limit the number of riders to offset organizational costs. We've considered having one more full swing at things and then turning it into an annual ride that just sort of happens (a la Critical Mass). We've poured over all of it and what we came to was scrapping all of our previous ideas and raising the bar.

This year, for the first time ever, we are offering two simultaneous events. The original Almanzo 100 and the Royal 162. What is the difference? We're happy to explain.

First, the Almanzo 100:

100 miles of rolling gravel roads through Southeastern Minnesota.
No outside support.
12 hour window to finish.

Second, the Royal 162:

162 miles of rolling gravel roads through Southeastern Minnesota.
No outside support.
15 hour window to finish.

Why the addition of the 162? When the first Almanzo 100 was raced in 2007 the field was 12 people (4 of whom finished) and the reviews were unanimous that the course was difficult. The following two years the numbers grew and the times got faster. Last year we had 34 people finish under 6 hours...that is simply amazing! With the faster finishes and growing numbers we've gathered that while still difficult for the likes of us, there are riders out there that can finish 100 miles with ease. So, this year we've decided to raise the bar and try to make a portion of the Almanzo more difficult for those looking for that extra challenge. Sure, 162 miles isn't for everyone and we don't expect everyone to sign up for it (that's why we've kept the 100 and always will), but we know that there are racers out there looking for more and that's why we've decided to add on.

The registration process will remain the same, we only ask that when filling out your cards please make a note as to which event you'd like to enter. A simple "100" or "162" would be fine, but go at it as you wish.

There was a time not so long ago when there were visions of Almanzo wheel sets rolling around gravel roads throughout the US. At one point there was even talk of Almanzo framesets as well. That said, we here at Almanzo headquarters are pleased to announce today that the mention of framesets has passed and the wheel set deal has fallen through the proverbial floor. It may seem counterintuitive to be celebrating these abandoned projects, but we assure you that their departure has done nothing but restore and secure the ideals that the Almanzo 100 was founded on.

So, for the 2011 running of the Almanzo 100 there has been a significant reduction in the amount of sponsorship. We had considered selling advertising space on the blog, the rider packets and along the sides of the start/finish area to offset some of the cost associated with hosting this thing, but after some very serious consideration we have decided against it. This is, and always has been, a genuine, honest, grassroots, Minnesota event. In fact, the businesses listed below are all Minnesota based companies with real, honest cyclists running them. Heck, we wouldn't put them on the list if we didn't know them personally and have complete faith in their products.

Micro CX: Season Two

Last year I decided (after riding the Glenwood Crap Cross in Minneapolis) that Rochester needed to share in the bliss that is underground cross racing. The turnout for 2009 was pretty good and I was hoping for the same this year. Yesterday, my hopes came true.

Last night we had 15 riders take the start for what was, by far, the best course to date. We got a couple pictures, but nothing to great as we were more focused on enjoying the whole event firsthand. Here is the photo wrap up and to hoping that the next one is even better.

Just got this from a friend regarding Italy's history of gravel road riding. I thought it might be appropriate to invite the man who got it all started over there. So here it is, an open invitation to Mister Giancarlo Brocci.

Mister Brocci,

I would like to extend to you a most sincere invitation to what I believe to be America's version of L'Eroica. On Saturday, the 14th of May, 2011, riders from around the USA will join together in the small hamlet of Spring Valley, Minnesota to ride the beautiful, yellow rock roads of the Upper Midwest. My hope is that with your presence, we could bridge the gap between the pure history of bicycling's roots and the bright future that I see for cycling in the years to come. I realize that you may never see this, but should your eyes fall upon it, I extend to you my services in making your visit a reality. Essay Question

With the first season of the AGRS series coming to a close this weekend up in Duluth it’s almost time to wrap up a wonderful year of gravel road racing. Starting all the way back in April with the Ragnarok 105 and working our way around the state, over 600 riders have already experienced what these wonderful, grassroots events have to offer. As an organizer, as well as a rider/racer, I have my very own collection of experiences, but I am afraid they are one sided. Having said that, it would be great to hear from you.

I know that some of you keep blogs and have already captured your experiences with both words and photos. For those that I have seen, I am genuinely delighted to have been a witness. As I sit here thinking about this last year and the three years that led up to it I cannot help but think about all of the different people who have helped build the Almanzo 100, as well as the other events in the AGRS into such a successful collection of community effort.

So it is with genuine interest that I ask to hear your story. In 1000 words or less please capture how you found this gravel road racing business. Whether you rode in the Rag, the Almanzo, the Dirty Benjamin, the Gentlemen's Ride or have plans to attend this weekends Heck of the North, please tell your story of how free gravel road racing has, or has not changed cycling for you.

As the entries come in, a few of them will be selected and placed right here on the Almanzo 100 blog and two lucky contestants will get a free 'Crush Gravel' t-shirt.

Water issues.

I just got back from driving the lowest parts of the route and here is the deal. For the most part the route is dry and dusty. The lowest parts, including the road through Foretville State Park and the "water crossing" are wet. How wet you might ask? I'll tell you.

First, the Forestville road: Once you cross the bridge there is a puddle about 40 yards across. At it's deepest right now it is about 8 inches. My guess will be that by tomorrow at 11:00am or noon (when people start rolling through) it should be down to four or less. Which will be easy to roll through. Just keep your head up and ride smart as the pavement underneath might be muddy and slippery.

Second, the water crossing: As of today it was moving pretty swiftly. My guess will be that by tomorrow morning it will have receded pretty well. From what I could see it had already dropped about four feet from where it was when it was raining last night. As a precaution, I am going to be driving out there very early tomorrow morning to check it. If I think it is too bad, I will reroute that section.

All in all the roads looked great. They county was out doing some work on a couple of the hill sections and what was left seemed to be a pretty chunky mess, but there were certainly good lines.

My best advice for tomorrow would be to ride smart, keep your head up and remember that this is all just for fun anyway. Oh yeah, and keep the rubber side down.

Weather reports.

It's raining...a lot. In fact, its flooding...a lot. I have spoken with some folks from Spring Valley and they said it wasn't bad enough to call in the back-ups so we should be good for Saturday. Truth be told, the worst of the flooding is in a town called Pine Island which is 15 miles northwest of Rochester. Where we're headed is south and east.

That said, I am planning to drive out to the lowest parts of the course tomorrow sometime to take a look at things. I expect to find peanut buttery roads with plenty of squish. My hope is that the water hasn't worn away any of the actual road, but I won't know until I see it tomorrow.

As of right now the ride is still on and will not be canceled. The only way I would consider a cancellation would be the introduction of some irreversible act of nature that makes the roads completely unrideable and I don't see that happening.

With high winds and no rain expected for late tonite and all day tomorrow I think we'll be in the clear. However, plan for water in the creek. I'm sure that'll be unavoidable at this point.

If anything changes, I'll put it up here.

Simplicity

The Almanzo 100 started in 2007 as a simple, free gravel road race. Today it makes a return to that business model. Today, the focus of this race is going back to what it was intended to be; a simple, free gravel road race. In a few days the Facebook and Twitter accounts will be closed.
