notice.

I have had an amazing year so far and I cannot wait to tell you all about it. I have been trying to make some time to put it into words, but I have been terribly busy trying to rest my mind and decompress after the last two weeks. I hope to have two separate reports coming in the next few days...one for the Almanzo and one for my first journey into mountain biking. Stay tuned.

Thank you.

Thank you all so very much! Your willingness to come out and spend that much time on a bike, on gravel roads means more than you will ever know. I am currently tallying the results and prepping them for this site. I'll get them up as soon as I can, but with 268 it's gonna take me a bit (I appreciate your patience).

I will be putting up the names and contact info for those that played an instrumental role in making this thing happen if you'd like to extend your thanks to them. Also, some of you asked about another jersey order...I am going to place another order on the 1st of June. You can get all the details by clicking here.

I would like you all to know that I am truly grateful for all of your support. I heard that some of you were asking about making a contribution to the event. I've always had a lot of reservation when it comes to putting out a donation bucket, but if you'd like you can click here and make a small contribution.

Thanks again for everything and I'll get the final results up soon.

***IMPORTANT***

The most important things to remember:

1. You are responsible for you. (Imagine a training ride)

2. Sign in and packet pick-up can be done at one of three places, they are:
-Friday from 1:00pm-4:00pm at Bicycle Sports in Rochester
-Friday from 5:00pm-9:00pm at Kathys Pub in Rochester
-Saturday from 7:00am-8:30am at Kingsland Highschool in Spring Valley

3. The race will start promptly at 9:00am at Kingsland Highschool in Spring Valley

4. There are services (grocery store, etc.) at 42 miles (Preston).

5. You can pack a drop bag to be dropped at the 62 mile checkpoint.

6. There is nothing between mile 62 and the finish beyond gravel and hills.

7. You are responsible for you.

8. There is no SAG for this event: you break down, you figure it out.

9. Help each other.

10. Be safe and PLEASE DON'T LITTER (I've seen it first hand at events like this and it is disgusting. Should you decide to litter, please don't come back as you're kind ain't welcome here.)

*If you're staying in the yard and have questions about how to get there, call me at fife oh sven - too sven won - tree sven for tree

A special note to the first one back.

Sean at Rawland Cycles wanted me to let everyone know that the first person back will be the proud new owner of one of these framesets. That's right folks, the first person back gets their very own Drakkar frameset!!! You can find more info through the link. Check it...and pedal your ass off!

Last minute race details.

I sent this out in an email and had the subject line all screwed up, my apologies. At any rate, here is the message in it's entirety:

Less than a week remains! I hope you’ve been getting the miles in. I drove the course today and it looks pretty tough. The rain will help speed the gravel up, but too much and it’ll be peanut buttery. There seemed to be at least one clean line for the entire 100 miles (that’s a good thing) despite a fair amount of fresh rock having been put down.

I just want to go over a couple of last minute details before everybody loads up the car and heads for the village of Spring Valley.

First and foremost: YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN! YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU AND ALL OF YOUR ACTIONS!

Second: Have a plan B. If you breakdown and/or get stranded, NO ONE IS COMING TO GET YOU unless you’ve already arranged it with them.

Third: If you don’t think you can make it back to the finish inside of 10 hours, bring some lights as you’ll be finishing in the dark.

Fourth: If you can, swing by the bakery in downtown Spring Valley the morning before the race and get a pastry…they’re amazing!!

Fifth: Johnny Ringo’s (the bar across the street from the bakery in Spring Valley) will be the place to be after the race. Drop in and have a beverage, share your stories from the road with other riders. Kick back and rest a bit before heading on down the road.

Sixth: The lady who owns the A&W Drive-in has been a huge help for this year’s Almanzo, if you can, stop by on the way out and return the favor.

Seventh: Here is a link to download a copy of the 2010 release form. You’ll need a completed copy of this to get your race packet. If you download, print, fill out and bring it with you, your trip through the check-in line/packet pick-up area will be quick and smooth.

Eighth: There IS going to be another jersey order. If you care to get in on this order, please follow this link and the directions you’ll find there.

I think that covers the bulk of it. The packets are stuffed, the specials awards are collected and counted. The packing lists are being assembled and the scooter is being prepped. Everything is looking great, including the weather. There will be an announcement later in the week to reveal the grand prize for whomever comes across the line first, but you'll have to wait for that one...

*IMPORTANT* - 5/4

First off, let me apologize for the discrepancy where start lines and start times have been concerned. I have received a few emails asking for clarification on where and when this whole party is going to happen. Here it is:

Friday, May 14th: You may sign in and pick up your packet at one of two places (to relieve congestion on Saturday morning).

1. Bicycle Sports (1:00pm to 4:00pm)
2. Kathy's Pub (5:00pm to 9:00pm)

Saturday, May 15th (Race Day): You may sign in and pick up your packet at the High School in Spring Valley. The following is a break down of the whole day in the order in which things will occur.

1. Sign in & Packet pick up (7:00am - 8:30am)
2. Pre-race announcements (8:45am - 8:59am)
3. Starting Bell (9:00am)
4. 62 mile Checkpoint will close (4:00pm)
5. Finish Line will close (9:00pm)
---you cannot race without picking up your packet---

*A couple notes about the start line - We have been given full use of the grounds at the high school in Spring Valley and there will be volunteers there assisting the parking situation. Also, we have not been given any access to the school buildings and therefore do not have access to the restrooms (I have been told there may be an outhouse, but I wouldn't plan for it). Please make alternate arrangements to take care of that business prior to your arrival at the school.

**Spring Valley has been gracious is allowing us to come and use there community for this event. Please show some love and return the favor by eating in their restaurants, drinking in their bars or simply by refueling your tank on the way out of town.

***Please remember that this event is to be held on OPEN ROADS. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN and will be held accountable as such. If you find yourself in danger it is your responsibility to get out of it (just as though you were out for a ride by yourself on any other day). If you cannot finish, you must make arrangements to be extracted (NO ONE IS GOING TO COME GET YOU UNLESS YOU'VE PREVIOUSLY ARRANGED IT WITH THEM).

More specifically.

This is a response to a comment left for the previous post.

The Drop Bag:

Please try and keep this bag as small as possible. Imagine the difficulty in transporting 420+ duffel bags without a semi-trailer? I currently have four(4) vehicles to transport bags and possibly a couple more. If the bags are small, this will be a fantastic exercise in race day logistics.

These bags will be transported back to the start line in the order they are received/used (first used, first returned). Keep in mind the checkpoint closes at 4:00pm so the last bags should be coming in just before 5:00pm.

The Water Crossing:

Currently the water crossing is nearly bone dry. Provided there isn't a tremendous amount of rain in the days leading up to the event, this should be the case come race day. Fear not, you will be dry.

The Spectators:

The best place to watch the race will be just outside the Southwest Corner of Preston.

I hope this is helpful. There will be more info coming in a couple of days.
